While south-east England sweltered in 34 C, here in Devon the first day of August brought plenty of sunshine but more comfortable temperatures in the mid-20s. Whatever the trigger, weather-related or not, yesterday saw a mass emergence of flying ants. At lunchtime there were literally hundreds taking to the air, with this clump of Mexican Daisy,
Erigeron karvinskianus being used as a launch pad by those swarming out of crevices in the path. Later we heard House Martins calling from so high up that they were almost lost to the eye. We wondered if they were enjoying the insect bonanza.
