How many Geums?
Last weekend I noticed a gone-over Geum and remembered that just after flowering is a good moment to make more of these often under-rated plants from divison. It was only when I began counting that I realised we have managed – without trying – to amass quite a few varieties over the dozen-or-so years we have been here. Partly because they do really well in our woodland-edge conditions but largely because many of them are such good-looking plants, from the discreet charm of the white-and-apple-green G. rivale 'Album', through the cheerful soft yellow of G. 'Lisanne', to the in-your-face EasyJet orange of G. 'Prinses Juliana', of which these are divisions made on Sunday. The popular semi-double G. 'Lady Stratheden' mostly comes true from seed, though some turn out red instead of the intended orange-yellow. But first I have to remember to collect and sow the seed before it's too late for another year...
